Do I know you? Half of us don't know our neighbours' first names

Worryingly, a third of adults admitted they could pass their neighbour in the street without realising they shared a garden fence

Everybody might need good neighbours - but we are clueless over who they are, a study has revealed. Half of us don’t know next door’s first name and seven out of 10 have no idea of their surname either.

According to research, our busy lifestyles are turning us into an isolated nation - living just yards away from other families but never finding out any details about them. Worryingly, a third of adults admitted they could pass their neighbour in the street without realising they shared a garden fence and almost two thirds could not recall how long they had lived next door.

The survey by Churchill Home Insurance found more than four out of 10 were stumped over whether their neighbours had children and almost half did not know if they had a pet. Hardly surprising then that almost three-quarters of us don’t know what our neighbours do for a living and less than a third would say they were in their group of friends.

And one in 10 who did know the family next door, admitted they didn’t like or trust them and would avoid them at all costs.

Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, said: “The lack of trust and familiarity between neighbours does have implications.

“People may be less willing and less able to watch out for each other - realising there is a stranger on a neighbour’s property is very difficult if we cannot recognise the person who lives there.

"Maintaining a good relationship with those we live closest to can make our communities a safer and more sociable place to live.” - Mirror UK
