IndyCar driver smashes trophy...on the podium?

poor trophy..
RACING driver Sebastien Bourdais won a glass trophy for finishing second at an IndyCar race in Toronto.

So far so good.

Then, as he was presented with the prize, he went to lift it up, thinking it was securely attached to its base.

Bad move.

The glass bowl toppled off the plinth, rolled across the winners' podium and smashed.

Hopefully Bourdais, who hasn't won much recently, will get another one.

The organisers should have known, though.

Glass trophies have a habit of getting destroyed by errant sports people.

In 2012, the crystal football Alabama won for beating Lousiana State University in the BCS championship game  was shattered when it was accidentally knocked off a display by the father of a current player.

It's not only glass trophies, either.

In 2011, Real Madrid were celebrating their King's Cup win with a bus parade through the streets of the Spanish capital when Sergio Ramos dropped the cup under the bus and it was destroyed.
